INTRODUCTION TO UNDERWATER ARCHAEOLOGY
SAT. JAN 26: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. / SAT. MAY 10: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Instructors: D. K. Abbass, Charlotte Taylor and Kerry Lynch.
Why and how archaeologists study submerged cultural materials, including shipwrecks; what underwater archaeologists DO NOT DO; legal and ethical issues and the difference between the two, RIMAP activities. This course is Required for fieldwork and other volunteer participation.

SITE MAPPING IN UNDERWATER ARCHAEOLOGY
SUN. JAN 27: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

This course discusses how to use archaeological data to map shipwrecks and incledes practicum. (Pre-requisite: RIMAP's Introduction Course)

SHIP CONSTRUCTION FOR UNDERWATER ARCHAEOLOGISTS
SUN. JAN 27: 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.

An introduction to what archaeologists need to know about how ships are built and how to interpret what they see underwater. Basic techniques and history of shipbuilding, rigging, and seafaring.

RHODE ISLAND IN THE REVOLUTION

Why Rhode Island has always been overlooked in general histories of the American Revolution and why the state was so important to the war's success. Battles, raids, individuals, causes and results.

CAPT. COOK'S SHIPS & MEN IN RHODE ISLAND: A CURIOUS HISTORY

James Cook is known as the "Great Navigator" because of his 3 voyages around the world in the 18th century. What is not generally known is how many of his ships and men had a relationship to Rhode Island.

ARTIFACT MANAGEMENT
SUN. FEB 17: 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Instructor: D. K. Abbass and Charlotte Taylor
How to track artifacts from the water to the archive and museum; handling, photography and paper trail. Includes practicum with artifacts in RIMAP's care.

MUSEUM THEORY AND ETHICS
SUN. FEB 17: 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.
Instructor: Elliot Caldwell
Proper care and documentation of artifacts, accession and deaccession procedures; exhibit policies; ethics of museum collections. This class prepares RIMAP to share its work with the public.

SPECIAL DIVE TECHNIQUES FOR UNDERWATER ARCHAEOLOGISTS
